I thought the story by Laurie Goering in your July 10 Chicagoland should receive an award for utter nonsense.
We are all agreed that PCB is not good to have around. But to call it one of the most toxic substances known is absolutely ridiculous.
There is not a single instance of a death attributable to PCB, let alone consider it in the same class as a war gas, atropine, or sodium cyanide. Its toxicity is more at the level of aspirin. We are concerned about PCB because there is a possibility that it could build up in the body on continuous exposure and have a serious long-term effect.
While there may be minor effects from a single exposure, most likely the young students at UIC will show no effects whatever.
