Directly beyond the bushes in the back yard of this two-story home at 929 Pheasant Walk Dr. in Schaumburg is a barren piece of land with a depression in it.
When it rains, the depression fills up like a lake, a neighbor said.
How awful, you might think at first.
But the hole is just doing its job, the neighbor explained, because it`s actually a retention pond and part of Slingerland Park. The Schaumburg Park District keeps the grass clipped fairly short, so mosquitoes aren`t a real problem, he added.
No mosquitoes, plenty of ball-tossing space and no mowing responsibilities; that`s pretty appealing, said Mark and Gail Ream of Arlington Heights, who attended an open house at the home Sunday. The white aluminum-sided house went on the market in July for $204,900 with Realty World, Terry Schiro and Associates.
”That (park) is a nice little amenity because you actually have a big back yard without having to take care of it,” Mark Ream said.
Except for children`s play equipment on the north end of the park, the land is free of baseball diamonds, basketball courts or other game fields.
”Then you don`t have a bunch of people milling around,” said listing agent Carmen Hansen.
The 14-year-old home itself has a small lot that`s heavily, though tastefully, landscaped with bushes, trees and hedges. The foliage helps hide the fact that the neighboring homes are very close by.
The home`s original owners brought outdoor-green hues indoors, including green ceramic tile in the entryway, green and off-white plaid vinyl tile in the kitchen, light-green textured wallpaper on the kitchen walls and green plush carpeting in the living and dining rooms.
Hansen told visitors that the second owners-the present sellers-have been gradually phasing out the color and making other improvements. They have remodeled two of the home`s bathrooms and installed new light brown carpeting on the central staircase and new salmon carpeting in the 19-by-17 family room. The family room has off-white walls, a brown brick fireplace and patio doors leading out onto a deck, which affords privacy thanks to the
landscaping.
The family room is open to both an informal eating area and the green kitchen. A door next to the kitchen pantry opens into a half bathroom, nicely remodeled in beige and pink.
On the other side of the kitchen is a 12-by-10 dining room that leads into the 15-by-14 living room, which features two long, formal windows.
That`s also the prime color in the 20-by-13 master bedroom on the second floor, though two walls are covered in an abstract design beige and brown metallic wallpaper.
The second floor`s main, newly redecorated bathroom features white ceramic floor tile, a long counter with two sinks, a long mirror, recessed lighting and pink and green flower wallpaper.
Not quite so tasteful is the eye-popping yellow in the home`s smallest
(10-by-10) bedroom.
The two neighboring bedrooms are also painted yellow, but in a very light shade that makes the rooms feel airy.
