Your editorial ”Missing an opportunity in Cuba” does not reflect what the Tribune`s reporters were informing from Cuba and it does not agree with what President Bush told the Soviets in his recent summit.
The theory that the United States` trade embargo is to blame for Cuba`s economic problems is the old excuse that Castro has used in his international propaganda to justify the economic failure of his communist regime.
Billions of dollars have been given to the discredited old tyrant by the Soviets during the past 31 years, in addition to the unpaid billions of dollars Castro has borrowed from both communist and Western countries. He has failed to use those dollars to improve the living conditions of the people of Cuba. Rather they have been used to build the largest army in the Western hemisphere after the United States`. They have also been used for
international subversion and terrorism.
Castro used limited economic resources to build an Olympic Village for the 17,000 athletes and tourists that participated in the Pan-American Games. He used scarce resources to feed these participants while imposing on the Cuban people the worst food rationing ever known.
The Pan-Am Games were used by the Cuban tyrant as a propaganda tool to improve the image of his discredited regime in the very same way that Adolf Hitler used the Berlin Olympics in 1936 to improve the image of his Nazi government.
Allowing free travel to Cuba will only serve the purpose of helping a bloody tyrant whose days are numbered.
