If anything positive could be said about the tragic story of Konerak Sinthasomphone, the 14-year-old Laotian boy who was murdered in Milwaukee by confessed killer Jeffrey Dahmer, it would be that there are still people in this often callous world who care enough to stand up for others.

The courageous act of Sandra Smith and Nicole Childress, the two young African-American women who came to the aid of Konerak in his final hour, deserves the highest praise.

As members of the Asian community, we would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Ms. Smith and Ms. Childress. We hope that young women and men everywhere will take to heart their kind, brave gesture, and together will work to build a better world for everyone.
