The Harold Washington Library Center will maintain the same hours as its most recent incarnation: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and holidays.
Special events at the center during the first month will include:
Oct. 4: Dedication; 10:30 a.m.
Oct. 8: Public art tours; 12:15 p.m., starting in main lobby. Also Oct. 22.
Oct. 10: ”Society in Focus”; Lerone Bennett Jr., executive editor of Ebony magazine, will discuss the life of Harold Washington in the first in a series of noontime lectures; 12:15 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 10: Bright Sheng, Lyric Opera`s composer-in-residence, will discuss and perform his music; 5 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 12: Inventor`s Workshop; 10:30 a.m. in meeting room 4.
Oct. 12: ”I Discover Columbus,” a 45-minute play for children; 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room.
Oct. 14: Illinois Literary Heritage Conference; speakers will include Gwendolyn Brooks, poet laureate of Illinois, and Dennis Britton, editor of the Sun-Times; beginning at 8:30 a.m., throughout the building.
Oct. 15: Gospel singer Albertina Walker; 12:15 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 16: Terry Savage, financial and consumer affairs writer, will discuss ways of saving, spending and investing money; 12:15 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 19: Science Fair workshops; 9:30 a.m. in classroom 9; attendance is by reservation only (phone 312-747-4400). Also Oct. 26.
Oct. 19: ”Children`s Day,” an all-day program; starting at 9 a.m., throughout the building.
Oct. 21: Blues musician Lonnie Pitchford; 12:15 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 23: ”Up Against the Wall,” a film presented by African American Images; 5 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 24: Sara Paretsky, creator of Chicago private eye V.I. Warshawski, will appear; 12:15 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 24: The Carolina Pidemont duo, John Cephas and Phil Wiggins, will be joined by a troupe of African dancers and musicians; 5 p.m. in the auditorium. Oct. 25: ”The World of Carl Sandburg”; 12:15 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 26: Writer-producer Charles Colbert will screen excerpts from ”Up Against the Wall”; 2 p.m. in the Chicago Authors` Room.
Oct. 26: ”Wings,” a silent film, will be accompanied by a live performance of music from the library`s Balaban and Katz Theatre Orchestra Collection; 2 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 28: Screening of ”A Room With a View”; 5 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 29: Sisters Raya Czerner Schapiro and Helga Czerner Weinberg will read from their book, ”Letters from Prague, 1939-1941”; 5 p.m. in the auditorium.
Oct. 30: Martha Tedeschi, associate curator of the Art Institute`s department of prints and drawings and curator of ”Wonders Never Ceasing!
View-making and the Rise of British Tourism,” will discuss the exhibition;
12:15 p.m. in the main exhibition hall.
Oct. 31: Chicago journalism will be the topic in the first in a new series, ”Literature on Occasion”; 12:15 p.m. in the auditorium.
There are also two ongoing exhibitions, ”Wonders Never Ceasing! View-making and the Rise of British Tourism” (Oct. 7 through Jan. 11 in the main exhibition hall) and ”Here`s Harold-Harold Washington: Vision of the New City” (Oct. 8 through April 15 in the winter garden).
