Copley Memorial Hospital President D. Chet McKee announced this week that as many as 20 of its 900 employees may be laid off by year`s end to adjust

”to the continuing trend towards outpatient care.”

A restructuring plan seeks to reduce the work force by 4 percent, or 30 full-time positions.

”Some of this reduction has already occurred through natural attrition and tighter scheduling,” McKee said in a written announcement. ”As many as 20 additional employees, including both full- and part-time positions, may be laid off before the end of the year.”

He said the restructuring program will also involve fewer work hours for certain departments and reduced nighttime staffing.
