Ford Motor Co. said it plans to produce a new wheel cover to replace the one on its new 1992 Taurus GL sedan after receiving complaints in the last two weeks that the ill-fitting cover screeches when the car is driven.
”The plastic cover rubs against the wheel. The rubbing makes an annoying sound, but it`s not a durability problem,” said Mike Moran of Ford.
”We`re trying to address the problem quickly and suspect it will mean coming up with a new plastic mold for the cover,” Moran said. ”We`ve been working fast and furious on it since we discovered the problem two weeks ago.
”We`ve only found the problem on the GL and only with the upgraded plastic covers,” he said.
”Until a fix is made, we`re shipping the Taurus GL without wheel covers from the factory. Replacement covers will be added as fast as we can produce and test the new ones,” he said.
Moran advised owners with the screeching covers to call the toll-free customer service number listed in their owners` manuals so they can be on record as needing the free replacements when they become available.
