Sophomore Pat Baldwin, who led the Big 10 in steals and had a 13.2 overall scoring average last season, will be conspicuous by his absence Tuesday when Northwestern begins basketball practice.

Coach Bill Foster said the 6-foot-1-inch point guard is suffering from effects of arthroscopic knee surgery in the off-season and ”probably will miss the first few days” of practice.

Baldwin is one of four returning starters. The others are his backcourt running mate, junior Todd Leslie, who led the team in scoring last season with a 14.3 average; and 6-11 sophomore Kevin Rankin and 6-9 junior Charles Howell in the frontcourt.
