The District of Columbia is celebrating its 200th birthday. The U.S. Postal Service recently issued a stamp to commemorate this bicentennial. Where does our nation`s capital go from here?
There is a bill in the Senate to ignore the provisions of the Constitution and remake the District of Columbia into our 51st state.
The district, an area about ten miles square, would be a mere speck on the map of the United States. The thought is to set aside the many federal government buildings into a separate enclave and declare the remainder of the area a state, giving the few hundred thousand inhabitants two senators and a representative in Congress.
I don`t believe a few self-promoters should be allowed to tamper with the status of the district. It is our national capital, and all citizens in this country should have some say in the matter.
Hopefully, the majority of members in Congress will never vote for this travesty, but it is disheartening that one of our own senators has been in favor of this action.
