In the Oct. 3 Voice of the people, Joseph Kenny tried, with help from earlier Tribune articles, to suggest that, ”Since there is a labor shortage in Illinois it seems that those unemployed either are lacking basic skills for employment, or prefer not to work.”

Well, Mr. Kenny, my two roommates and I do prefer to work and have all the skills included in a college degree, yet cannot find a job.

One of my roommates graduated with honors with a bachelor`s degree in philosophy/religion, and worked for three years during school in a shoe store. Yet she could not get a job in a shoe store here in Chicago.

My other roommate graduated with a bachelor`s in art history and had extensive experience working in galleries. The best she was offered was part- time work at $6.50 an hour.

I graduated with a bachelor`s degree in English literature and have experience in the commodities business. I could not get a job as a file clerk. So tell me, Mr. Kenny, where are these jobs that should fall to us so eager and educated?
