The first week of practice is history, and Northeastern Illinois basketball coach Rees Johnson won`t mind if history repeats itself.

”We`re light years ahead of last year,” Johnson said.

Northeastern was 2-25 last season, its first in Division I.

”We`re ahead of last year defensively, even without much practice. We have that much more talent,” Johnson said.

The new talent comes from sophomore point guard Victor Snipes, who played at King High School and Lakeland Junior College. Another key newcomer will be Snipes` backcourt mate, senior Leonard Langdon from Dunbar and Utah. The third redshirt player is 6-7 sophomore Phil Troutman, a transfer from Southern University in New Orleans.
