Australian women`s groups are calling for legislation to give police powers of mandatory search and confiscation of firearms when serving restraining orders on spouses accused of domestic violence. A report by the National Committee on Violence Against Women recommends that suspects in domestic assault cases be confined until a hearing is held, as is now the case with suspects in other types of assault cases.
