Frank James wrote in Tempo (Oct. 21) that ”Fewer than 40 people attended the . . . banquet of the 17th annual meeting of the National Council on Stuttering, . . . despite the estimated 70,000 stutterers in the Chicago area.” Perhaps fluent speakers wonder why?

Writing in the British magazine ”Encounter” of Nov. 1966, Philip French, a stammerer, said, ”The fact is, and it is a sad and important one, that stammerers cannot stand each other`s company. Stammerers do not need each other-on the contrary, they seek out and admire the fluent.”
