The quintessential Environments II outfit might be this: a two-piece dress in yards of dense aubergine knit; classic lines surprised by a fringe; a subtle, welted collar treatment set off by a scarf that looks like a web of delicate feathers. Then, the whole business is snapped into focus by one of those knock `em dead pins, a work of art in silver and amethyst.
”We make our customers look expensively dressed, even though many of our outfits can be had for under $100, not including accessories,” said Fay Scothorn, owner of Environments II.
Scothorn works hard at bringing original designer clothes and accessories together in a welcoming atmosphere. The staff puts shoppers at ease-even those who may have had their fashion sense eroded by years of scruffing around in jeans and sneakers.
Environments II has a reputation as a place to shop if you hate to see yourself coming and going.
”I go to all the boutique shows in New York. A lot of my designers are struggling and seek us out, therefore we get a good price. We often use local designers just starting out, some of whom will show to me even before they show at the Merchandise Mart,” Scothorn said.
The clothes are sporty, dressy and in-between. There`s outerwear, too, from chunky all-weather coats to spectacular full-length leathers.
There are belts galore; inlaid, metallic, tooled and jeweled; scarves in luscious chenille plaids and glittery crystal pleats; beaded gloves and sporty mittens; sunglasses; and purses from hefty leather carry-alls to all-but-useless jewel box affairs.
Environments II is also part jewelry store. You could choose something traditional or a statement piece like the earrings of cascading faux diamonds; prices range from $12 to several hundred dollars.
”Many people come in here saying, `I want a current look.` People also say they can wear our clothes for 10 years and still be current,” Scothorn said.
