A newpaper`s cartoon page usually brings a smile to the face. However, I had the opposite reaction after reading the ”Geech” comic strip recently.
The cartoon has shown a prospective student applying to ”Acme Vo-Tech”
for a computer repair program. In one strip, the admissions counselor says,
”If you can`t afford white collar, how about something in blue?” The student replies, ”Blue`s my favorite collar. . . .”
It`s interesting that the cartoon`s creator refers to vocational school students as blue collar, which he believes is a notch below white collar. In fact, technically prepared individuals in this already growing industry are being called ”gold collar” workers. Gold collar workers will be considered a notch above white collar workers because of their value to their individual employers and American industry.
Technical school students have been stereotyped for a long time. It`s time the media and the public began to recognize that students like those at ITT Technical Institute will be keeping America competitive in a global environment now and in the future.
