Creating a shortcut for commuters leaving the south end of the Woodfield area in Schaumburg, area officials on Wednesday officially opened a one-mile, four-lane extension of Martingale Road.
The extension connects the Woodfield regional area with the Biesterfield Road/Interstate Highway 290 interchange, allowing commuters to bypass the congested Higgins Road interchange with I-290.
The extension runs south of the Schaumburg-Martingale Road intersection.
Schaumburg financed the road improvement by issuing $7 million in general revenue bonds.
As many as 20,000 cars a day are projected to use the new road.
