Your editorial ”Democracy comes to the Teamsters” (Dec. 18) was very misleading. For one thing, the hourly wage for Eastern Europe, Russia and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is, to say the least, not comparable. For your editorial to equate them as if throwing off the chains of bondage is ludicrous.
For another thing, you resort to the time-tested ”little white lies” of all media, politicians, poll takers, etc., of reporting percentages, instead of actual amounts or figures. Your editorial flaunts ”Carey took 48 percent of the vote in a three-man race”; ”neither of his opponents even came close.”
Why didn`t you tell the whole truth? I voted in the teamsters election. More than one million teamsters did not vote. Of 1.6 million ballots sent out, a little more than 400,000 were returned as voted. Ron Carey actually got 12 percent of the teamsters to vote for him.
