By attempting to mock the birth of Christ, Dick Locher`s editorial page cartoon of Dec. 24 unintentionally gives a very real message. He attempts to bring Christ`s birth down to practical realities, but what he really does is show how hollow our practical realities really are. What would our world be like without Jesus Christ? What would it be like if Mary or Joseph had decided that, considering the circumstances, having a child wouldn`t be prudent?
What Locher is really saying is that by all of our planning and selfish prudence, we are really shutting out love.
