Susan Moehling`s comment (Voice, Dec. 17) about the children buying their own school supplies got me to thinking about a plan for our children to be a part of the educational system. A chance for them to realize that everything in life is not free-including a good education.

Why not have each child in public school bring in $1 a month for each month of the school year? I know many are living in homes where welfare is their only livelihood. Yet I also know several folks that are on welfare that have cable TV, VCRs, automobiles. I have none of those because I can`t afford them. So what is $1 a month to each child? It may deprive them of a new video once a year!

The money could be used in their local school for supplies or go into a fund to be used for school repairs, etc. Just imagine $450,000 a month for the schools!
