St. Ignatius` game Saturday against New Trier made for thrilling enjoyment-for the fans.

But for St. Ignatius coach Tom McKenna, the 53-47 non-conference victory by his seventh-ranked team was one headache after another.

St. Ignatius (13-3) raced out to a 19-10 lead in the second quarter, then suffered a stretch of 1-for-18 shooting in the third quarter to squander a 36-28 halftime lead.

”To the fans, it was just a case of two good teams going after each other,” McKenna said. ”To them, it proably seemed like nothing but excitement.”

With Mary Logue scoring 14 points, Bridget Jordan 12 points with 13 rebounds and Theresa Jordan 10 points, St. Ignatius had enough down the stretch to win.

”We regrouped in time and I was pleased to see that,” McKenna said.

New Trier (12-4) got 14 points from Jenny Wright.

Mother McAuley 65, St. Louis Visitation 56-No. 11 McAuley proved a rude host as Joanne McCarthy (25 points, five rebounds), Jenny Costello (13 points, nine rebounds) and Patty Harvey (13 points, five rebounds) led the way.

Barrington 71, St. Edward 61-No. 9 Barrington coasted behindthe Beggren sisters, Ericka (30 points) and Ashley (12). Michelle Hollenstein paced St. Edward with 18.

Maine West 56, Lincoln-Way 52-Carrie Wegrzyn fired in 22 points and Terry Bartholemew chipped in 10 for No. 2 Maine West (14-1). Mary DeGroot`s 19 points lead No. 13 Lincoln-Way.

Chicago Christian 71, Wheaton Christian 34-Chicago Christian got 17 points from Amy Kuipers and 13 each from Amy Retsema and Gwen Erffmeyer in its nonconference win.

Richmond-Burton 45, Burlington Central 42-Julie Parker stole the ball and streaked in for a layup with eight seconds remaining to seal the win for Richmond (10-5, 4-2) in the Big Eight. Theresa Amore paced Richmond with 15 points. Robyn Runge`s 19 points were tops for Burlington.

Elgin Academy 35, Latin 18-Lela Bruno scored nine to help Elgin (9-6, 5-2) take the Independent School League victory.

Streamwood 55, De Kalb 29-Angie Everhart`s 13 points were tops for Streamwood (5-11, 3-4) in posting the Upstate Eight victory.

Rich South Tournament-No. 10 Rich South pushed its record to 14-0 with a 117-30 rout of Academy of Our Lady. Iennetta Bentley led Rich South with 26 points. Keila Flagg added 22 and Tiffany Burnside 15. South will play Illiana Christian (9-5), a 48-31 winner over Bremen behind Amy Docter with 13 points. Marian Catholic (10-5) beat Crete-Monee 57-39 behind Kristin Valenti with 15 points and Kathryn Gleason with 14. Marian will meet Thornridge (10-3), a 49-47 winner over Evergreen Park with Velvety Beard (14 points) and Sherron Wright (12) leading the way.

Willowbrook (8-2) will battle Tinley Park (10-4) in another championship bracket games. Tinley Park (10-4) edged Kankakee 55-54 despite Alexis Malone`s 23 points, and Willowbrook (8-2) hammered Thornton Fractional North 92-42 with Mary Wisokowski scoring 22 points.

Lockport 60, Homewood Flossmoor 34-Jenny Sankey finished with 16 points and Laura Blaeson 13 for Lockport.

Joliet Catholic 59, St. Viator 41-Sheila Fox scored 23 points and Kristi Klover added 16 for Joliet in the East Suburban Catholic win.

Evanston 48, Glenbrook South 44-Evanston rallied from a point down at the half to nip Glenbrook South in the Central Suburban South. Schenita Stewart tallied 23 points and Schonella Stewart 10 for Wildkits (11-6,4-1).

Young 65, Maria 45-Freshmen Dominique Canty pumped in 23 points, and Ewyhana Miller added 13 and Tiffany Johnson 10 as No. 16 Young (9-5) took home a nonconference win.

Buffalo Grove 71, Hersey 66-Michelle Ratay scored 35 points with 10 rebounds and six assists in leading No. 8 Buffalo Grove (15-3, 5-1) in the Mid-Suburban North.

Cary-Grove 58, Woodstock 43-Amy Nelson poured in 24 points for Cary-Grove (13-6, 7-0) in its Fox Valley win.

Lake Zurich 47, Crystal Lake Central 32-Lake Zurich (4-12, 2-4) got by in the Fox Valley with Nicole Vasey scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Dundee-Crown 66, Jacobs 40-Dundee-Crown jumped out to a 27-16 halftime lead then eased away in the second half. Teri Prestage scored 17 points for Dundee (9-9, 3-4) and Amy Dewey added 12.

Elk Grove 46, Prospect 45-Nikki Witonski connected on two free throws with under a minute remaining to win it for Elk Grove (11-5, 4-1) in the Mid- Suburban South. Witonski finished with 18 points.

Addison Trail 55, Proviso East 46-Michelle Mandarino (21 points), Daniella Santoro (14) and Eline Wessel (12) led Addison Trail (9-10, 3-3) back from a 29-25 halftime deficit in the West Suburban Gold. Donna Lewis` 11 points were tops for Proviso (11-6, 2-3).

Zion-Benton 37, Mundelein 30-Amy Gryszkiewicz finished with ten points and nine rebounds and Cherie Washington chipped in with eight points and nine boards for Zion (9-7, 5-3) in the North Suburban Conference.

Lake Forest 53, North Chicago 46-Kristin Jackson`s 19 points and Tracey Thomas` 16 were enough to get Lake Forest (3-11, 2-7) a North Suburban Conference win.

Plainfield 49, Minooka 27-Crystal Dobbs tossed in 26 points to spark Plainfield in the Little Seven.

Resurrection 63, Regina 52-Sandie Esche scored 18 points, Chris Sobieszczyk 12 and Mary Connolly 11 as Resurrection (12-2) rolled in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference. Connolly grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots; Tara Lykowski had 10 assists. Susie Sanford paced Regina (10-6) with 21 points.

Woodlands 51, Lake Forest Academy 22-Woodlands (11-0, 7-0) remained one of the few undefeated teams in the area by pounding Academy in the Independent School League matchup. Joni Corbin led the way with 14 points and Megan Walsh registered 10.

Driscoll 73, Providence-St. Mel 54-Driscoll (9-10) dominated the non-conference game with Joanne Siedlecki and Martha Kelly scoring 17 points each. Selena Lesupe (20) and Hanifah Powe (19) led St. Mel.
