For a complete Disaster Preparedness Plan that includes a checklist for assembling a home emergency kit, contact the American Red Cross, Mid-America Chapter, at 312-440-2000.
The Red Cross also has a brochure titled ”Recovery Information for Fire Victims,” which includes information on replacing documents; repairing furniture, clothes and appliances; saving food; and cleaning floors, rugs and tile.
In the event of a fire, here are a few recommendations for post-disaster actions from the Red Cross and other relief agencies:
– If you can`t move back to your home, remove valuables and protect any items from weather damage or theft.
– Board up windows and smashed doors. If you rent, the owner should do this for you. Check with the fire department to make sure the utilities are shut off if necessary.
– If you are insured, contact your insurance agent as soon as possible and begin making a list of lost property.
– If you are not insured or if your insurance does not cover all your losses, you may declare these losses on your federal income tax returns, minus $100. Contact the Internal Revenue Service for more information.
– If you don`t have a permanent address, you may want to have mail forwarded to a friend or relative.
