Your editorial of Dec. 30, ”A garbage disposal plan that works,” was outstanding! It`s extremely important that the editorial writers of a big city newspaper are showing genuine interest in this most difficult issue. You are right about garbage disposal being the nation`s No. 1 environmental problem.
Your decision to promote the pay-per-bag disposal system will certainly serve to encourage other municipalities to consider the program. We all need a dose of encouragement when dealing with this controversial issue amidst a steady stream of opposition that bases much of its argument on convenience.
In one sense, the more inconvenient garbage disposal becomes, the greater the environmental benefits, including increased recycling, changes in packaging, the life cycle of landfills and the amount of trash that will be incinerated.
