In reference to Joan Beck`s Jan. 9 column (”Winning ugly: AIDS activists vs. U.S. medicine”):

Since Joan Beck insists on pitting disease against disease, an ”ugly”

tactic in itself, I would like to remind her that, unlike cancer or heart disease, polio or Alzheimer`s, AIDS is an epidemic, a full-blown national health crisis. And ACT-UP uses its ”ugly activism” because, unless Magic Johnson wants to volunteer, candidates for a poster child that would pull the average American heartstring (or government purse-string) are pretty scarce.
