I read with interest Randall Kulat`s letter of Jan. 2, in which he responded to Margaret Johnston`s ”diatribe” (Voice, Dec. 19) against Beth Austin, who wrote an article discussing her decision to terminate her pregnancy.

Mr. Kulat, who happens to be Ms. Austin`s husband, described the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy termination and closed by saying ”I truly regret the Tribune`s decision to print her letter.”

Ms. Johnston`s response may have caused the painful emotions surrounding the affair to resurface. The Tribune editors should not, however, evaluate each letter received for printing to determine if it will in some way cause someone discomfort. The point of the Voice of the people section is to foster the free exchange of ideas.

While the process will occasionally cause discomfort, it is essential to achieve greater understanding.
