Jon Hillebrandt, the UIC hockey team`s outstanding freshman goalie, continues to pile up the accolades. He was named Central Collegiate Hockey Association player of the week for his efforts in a split with third-ranked Michigan last weekend.
Hillebrandt allowed only three goals, stopping 68 of 71 shots in the Flames` 4-1 victory and 2-1 loss to the Wolverines. Michigan had been averaging five goals a game. Hillebrandt, who hasn`t allowed a goal in the first or second periods for three straight games, made 18 saves in the first period alone Friday night.
Senior wing Rick Judson, meanwhile, moved into a tie for third place in UIC career scoring. He had three assists against Michigan to tie Mike Rucinski at 151 career points.
Minnesota, led by parallel bars (9.70) and all-around (113.50) champion John Roethlisberger, horizontal bar champion Brian Ottenhoff (9.650), vault winner Kerry Houston (9.60) and still rings champion Rob Hanson (9.70) edged Ohio State 279.20-278.95 to win last weekend`s annual Windy City gymnastics meet at UIC. The Flames finished a respectable sixth at 266.30-respectable because UIC`s top gymnast, Barry McDonald, is still recovering from a sprained wrist.
McDonald competed on the pommel horse, finishing 11th, and also on the still rings and parallel bars, but not in the all-around.
Tasia Georganas had 25 points, Angela Gilbert 23 and Val O`Neill 16 points, 20 rebounds and a school-record nine blocks as the women`s basketball team (4-12 overall, 1-3 in the North Star Conference) beat Cleveland State 92-85 Sunday.
UIC`s Joe Cipich set a school record in three-meter diving in the Flames` 143-75 victory over Loyola. His total of 385.85 qualifies him for the NCAA Division I zone competition.
