The entrance to a concert hall might have a sign that reads ”Capacity 1,000,” but there are 1,500 people in line to take a seat. If all 1,500 were admitted, there would be people standing in aisles, excess noise, overworked restrooms and a miserable time for all-even those who had seats.

Compare this scenario to what is happening to the United States and the world in general: more immigrants plus a high national birth rate mean overcrowding, noise, polluted rivers and lakes, while the ever-increasing population continues to deplete food and natural resources.

The Tribune editorial of Jan. 7 said ”Europe should welcome immigrants,” stating also that America should do the same. That thought should be praised for its expression of humanitarian need and freedom for people who wish to escape oppression and poverty.

However, wouldn`t the responsible approach be to close our doors to immigrants until we can take care of our poverty, our disease, our crime and our pollution? Such an act would force other nations to mend their own problems before they create more for us.
