Your recent editorial on rejecting the lure of ”America First” was quite interesting, even though I disagree with it.
Over the past 45 years, there has hardly been one foreign country that has not benefited by our help directly or indirectly. Building up most of Europe, Israel and Japan was a great thing and had to be done, but now I think that it is time that we do some nice things for our own citizens.
We must create millions more jobs in order to put our unemployed back to work again. We need a national health policy that covers everybody. We need to help the poor and homeless and make sure that they get enough food. We must work to reduce the crime rate. We must create better mass transit and fix our bridges and highways. We must solve our crisis in education and see to it that everyone who wishes a college education can get one regardless of financial status. And we must build modern new factories and turn out better products.
In short, we need a sort of Marshall Plan for our own country. After all that we have done for others over the years, we sure deserve to do something for ourselves. And I hope that we get down to the task of doing it.
