The Jan. 7 editorial, ”Europe should welcome immigrants,” was absolutely ridiculous. You can`t compare present-day conditions with immigration to the U.S. when it was young and largely unsettled.

The countries of Europe are already overpopulated (as is the whole world). A country`s standard of living can go nowhere but down if it accepts large numbers of unskilled immigrants.

Statements that the average immigrant family in the U.S. and Canada pays $2,500 more in taxes every year than it receives in benefits is utter nonsense. If it were true, all we would have to do to balance the federal budget would be to open the immigration floodgates.

I suggest the writer of this editorial contact California`s governor and get his thoughts about the great advantages California is realizing from the massive immigration of recent years. He or she will find that California is being crippled by soaring social costs.
