The ”red eye” phenomenon occurs when the flash reflects off the retina of the subject`s eyes.

Photographers can minimize this by having the subject not look directly into the camera or by turning up the room lights before shooting, according to experts at Fuji Photo Film U.S.A.

Some newer 35 mm point-and-shoot cameras have a prefiring flash to reduce red eye.
