I loved Karen Green`s letter (Voice, Jan. 2) regarding Thoreau. My experience in a girl`s boarding school that was heavy on English and American literature was similar to hers-Thoreau and Emerson kind of came together.

Emerson always struck me as to the point, practical, sensible and full of wisdom. Thoreau, on the other hand, was kind of a wimp-and furthermore (to this card-carrying fiscal conservative), he did not pay his taxes, which drove me just crazy.

Although Thoreau always seemed to get the praise of my classmates, I delighted in visiting Emerson`s gravesite so as to honor him and his ways of thinking. I wouldn`t waste the time to visit Thoreau`s-another hippie from another age who just could not get his act together.
