The U.S. Senate soon will consider Senate Bill 2, the Neighborhood School Improvement Act, which is intended to assist local school districts improve their schools. The PTA supports this bill.
Tragically, private school lobbies are attempting to amend the bill with provisions that would divert scarce public tax dollars needed to improve and support our public schools to a voucher system that would provide money for private and parochial schools.
Recent stories in the Tribune have clearly stated the crisis in funding facing the public schools of Illinois. Diverting funds to private schools will not avert that crisis.
The PTA asks everyone to call our senators, Alan Dixon and Paul Simon, and urge them to use all of the limited dollars available for education to fund the programs that we know work and that our public schools need, to give all children the education they need to become responsible, productive citizens.
