Eight students at Maine Township High School East protested the school`s new dress code policy Tuesday, congregating in the school`s front corridor and refusing to remove their coats, a school spokeswoman said.

The policy, which took effect Monday in response to concerns about gangs, requires students to remove their hats, sweatbands and jackets when entering the building.

On Monday, 75 students blocked the school`s front hall and chanted anti-school slogans. Park Ridge police were called to break up the protest.

Tuesday`s protest, which began shortly after 8 a.m., ended about 45 minutes later after the students met with Principal Carol Grenier and decided to return to class, said Karen Larsen, the spokeswoman.
