I was distressed to read in the Jan. 20 Tribune the confession of Officer DeLegge of the Evergreen Park police that he had been using radar guns to catch motorists for 21 years without ever having seen an operating manual.
Using a radar gun to measure speed is not an infallible operation. Very large errors in the measurement can occur from false or multiple reflections unless the device is used correctly. The problem is especially severe in an urban setting. However, a motorist has almost no chance in court against police evidence from a radar trap.
I wonder how many motorists have been improperly convicted over the years in Evergreen Park (and elsewhere) on account of sloppy police radar procedures.
