Barbara Brotman`s offensively flip attempt to trivialize the issue of animal rights and legitimate herself as a fur-wearer has a familiar ring to it, but she should know that the practicality of an action is not guaranteed to render it morally palatable (Tempo, Jan. 20).
As slave owners strove to make a virtue of their heinous practice because it served their economic interest, Brotman maintains that slaughtering animals for their fur is acceptable because she is cold. By this line of ethical reasoning, Hitler was simply an astute politician. Cruelty perpetrated in the name of pragmatism is no less sadistic. Barbara, your sophistry is showing.
