The Caller ID ads are playing to base interests in people and are shameful for a public monopoly such as Illinois Bell to be running.
Caller ID is a worthless gimmick that no one really needs; it seems designed only to bring in additional monies to Bell. The TV ad has a woman terrified about who is calling late at night (it turns out to be her husband from out-of-town-how she recognizes the phone number from a hotel in another city I`ll never know).
But the thing that concerns me in this instance is that it encourages paranoia in people who stay home alone-and we don`t need more of that in today`s society! Plus, it gives ideas to people who would perpetrate late-night crank calls.
The radio ad involves a facetious treatment of a man illicitly phoning in ”sick” to his employer, and people finding out he`s lying. Do we need to encourage lying and deceit (let alone fraudulent relations with one`s employer) in today`s society?
Illinois Bell ought to be ashamed of sponsoring such low-class ads, ones that aid and abet societal problems rather than help them.
