This is in response to the Jan. 18 letter, ”Students, taxes,” that suggested eliminating the education tax on property bills in favor of a fee to be paid by parents of the students. While this appears to more accurately assign the burden to those who benefit, one must realize very few social programs operate in this manner.
In this case, it`s important to point out that everyone benefits from an educated citizenry. Ms. Siska indicates that she is a senior citizen, and makes her point while apparently forgetting how Social Security works. It is supported by all wage-earners, including those students` parents and some of those students.
And if the system remains the same, none of those students, or anyone born after the baby boom, will ever see the Social Security benefits to which they are supposedly entitled. Shoulder your burden, Ms. Siska, because everyone else is doing the same.
