On the front page of the Jan. 24 Business section under the heading

”Auto sales continue free fall,” America`s problem with Japan was graphically described.

The article said the Japanese parliament planned to purchase two Buick Park Avenues at $46,000 each!

Surely, it does not cost $20-25,000 to ship a Buick to Japan so, therefore, this must be the cost with import tax included. If import tax for U.S. cars is the equivalent of a 100 percent markup, it is no wonder U.S. cars do not sell in Japan!

The solution to our imbalance is simple-put enough tax on each Japanese car so they equate to $46,000.
