A supermarket union is staging informational pickets at a new wholesale warehouse store in Wheeling.

About 10 members at a time from Local 881 of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (AFL-CIO) are marching at Sam`s Club, 1055 McHenry Rd., a members-only warehouse that opened Jan. 28.

The union is protesting the fact that Sam`s, which is owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., is non-union. It poses a threat to the livelihood of the union`s 40,000 members in Illinois and northwest Indiana, said S.J. Peters, director of communications for the union.

Sam`s Club sells at discount prices to its members items ranging from food and produce to televisions, clothes and computers.

A Wal-Mart spokeswoman said the company had no objection to the picket line but would not respond to the union`s complaint.
