I was struck by the coincidence that while Gov. Edgar was saying on WGN-AM`s Bob Collins show (Jan. 24) that he knew of no opposi-tion to the proposed Lake Calumet airport, a report was out that Edgar had refused to see Calumet City Mayor Bob Stefaniak, who wanted to discuss this matter with him. Unless Edgar and his staff have had their heads in the sand, they should have heard of the votes by the people of Chicago`s 10th Ward, the Village Board of Burnham and the Calumet City Council opposing the Lake Calumet pro-posal. Edgar and his people should also have heard the opposition of Rep. Clem Balanoff (D-Chicago), state Sen. Richard Kelly (D-Hazelcrest), Burnham Mayor Eldreth Rundlett and 10th Ward Ald. John Buchanan.
Edgar and his staff surely should have received my written opposition as well as that of Citizens Against a Lake Calumet Airport, Save Our Suburbs and other groups that are opposed.
When I called the governor`s Chicago office on Jan. 24 seeking confirmation of Edgar`s words, it took five offices-including two in Springfield-to get anyone to say they would look into my inquiry. I was not encouraged when the last lady I talked to in Edgar`s Springfield office asked: ”Where is Burn-ham and how do you spell it?”
