The city of Albertville, France, located in the French Alps, plays host to the XVI Olympic Winter Games from Feb. 8 through 23. More than 2,000 athletes will converge on the quiet resort village of 20,000 and the surrounding Savoie Valley in pursuit of 57 gold medals. For the first time in Olympic history, the Games will be spread over 10 venues, covering 618 square miles of the French Alps.

This year marks the third time France is host of the Olympic Winter Games. The original Winter Games were held in Chamonix in 1924. Grenoble held the 1968 games.

beginning in 1994, they will be held two years apart. The Winter Games will next take place in 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway, followed by the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.
