I applaud your Jan. 26 editorial promoting better transit for the reverse commute. However, it did not go far enough. Aside from neglecting to mention technological innovations such as RTA`s Personal Rapid Transit project the editorial failed to go to the root of the problem: regional planning.
Toronto, a city smaller than Chicago, has the second most widely used transit system in North America behind New York. There are several reasons for this, among which are the ability of government to limit urban sprawl, require transit planning and contributions in new developments and require population densities sufficient to support transit.
The Chicago area has literally hundreds of governmental units and a
”market” orientation which inhibit planning. Until these problems are addressed, mass transit will always be a poor stepchild to the auto.
