As a navy personnelman attached to Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, I must take issue with the article, ”Navy floats coed dorm idea at recruit base” (Jan. 30), in which the recruit training command at Orlando is called
”the Navy`s largest boot camp.”
From its founding in 1911, Great Lakes has maintained its position as the Navy`s largest training facility. The recruit training command here is of such size that it could absorb the two other facilities at Orlando and San Diego. The total recruit population from June 1990 through May 1991 was more than 28,000.
Great Lakes also is the largest military installation in Illinois, the fifth largest naval base, the largest technical training school in the Navy and home of the largest mess hall in the Navy.
The personnel serving here take pride in the tradition of our base and wish it to be recognized for what it is-the Navy`s largest boot camp!
