How sad to read Tara Bradley-Steck`s perky story, ”Puppy pandemonium”
(Jan. 26), about the family who wanted to have a puppy from their own dog so they bred her and all the fun they had raising their 13 puppies.
How sad to ignore the grim reality of puppies and kittens being destroyed at overflowing shelters and pounds because the number of animals born exceeds the number of available homes by millions. The chance that even one out of ten born will live to see its first birthday is very slim.
Many communities throughout the United States are addressing this tragic problem by passing dog- and cat-breeding moratorium ordinances, having large license differentials between spayed and unspayed pets, and imposing fines for letting pets breed.
There is only one way to reduce the number of animals being destroyed and that is to reduce the number of animals being born.
