Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
Two pieces in your Feb. 6 edi-tion (”U.S. students lag in math, science” and ”The educational mainstream drowns gifted chil-dren”) compel me to suggest that parents seek more academic programs for their children beyond the limits of a six- or seven-hour school day, 180 days per year.
Children in Korea and Japan regularly attend lessons to sup-plement schoolwork. Additional practice has helped Asian chil-dren excel in math far beyond their peers in the West. Our stu-dents show the same ability to succeed when given the tools to expand their natural, but latent, potential in mathematics. They need the chance to challenge themselves while young to be prepared for the opportunities of a competitive tomorrow.
