Houston took advantage of a quick start and 23 points by Hakeem Olajuwon to give Rudy Tomjanovich a victory in his first game as interim coach.

Tomjanovich took over Tuesday after owner Charlie Thomas dismissed Don Chaney, the 1991 NBA coach of the year.

The Rockets (27-26), who had lost six of seven, snapped a two-game losing streak and avoided falling below .500 for the first time this season.

Otis Thorpe scored 22 and Kenny Smith had 17 as all five Rockets starters scored in double figures. Armon Gilliam led Philadelphia with 24 points and Charles Barkley added 23.
