A plan that would pare down the education bureaucracy by eliminating several school agencies, including the 57 regional school superintendents statewide, was proposed Thursday by State School Supt. Robert Leininger.

Leininger`s proposal, which was endorsed Thursday by a committee of the State Board of Education, would also eliminate the 18 educational service centers and the regional school boards that handle such matters as school district annexations and boundary disputes.

The entities would be replaced by regional agencies. Leininger said the proposal would reduce the number of regional superintendents and service centers from 75 to between 18 and 57, depending on how many regional organizations are established. The changes would require new legislation.
