A recent proposal to legalize video gambling in Chicago is yet another legislative folly in the making. It appalls me to think that our city fathers have to resort to preying further upon the vices of their constituents to generate additional revenues.

The proposal would allow certain locations to legally operate video gambling machines. Needless to say, the potential for corruption and abuse of these machines is overwhelming. The costs and bureaucracy of administering, monitoring and certifying the payout accuracy of the video gambling machines would also be astronomical.

The lottery was originally touted as the answer to funding our school systems. Now, after several years of lottery, our schools are still in desperate financial distress. Where does all that money go?

Our society is plagued with crime, violence and ill health as a result of our addictions to drugs and alcohol. We don`t need our leadership to support the establishment of another addiction for the sake of a buck.
