President Bush attacked Rep. Marty Russo`s proposal for national health care as socialism and then used as negative examples of governmental bureaucracy the months we check ”the mail for that income tax refund,” our efforts to ”track down a missing Social Security check,” and our wasting ”a day in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles.” Mr. Bush thereby falsely maligns our Internal Revenue Service, Health and Human Services and state governments.
I have never had to wait excessive months for a tax refund, never had a Social Security payment miss being deposited and never spent an entire day in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
I have, however, had to forego health insurance during the three years of my early retirement. I breathed a sigh of relief at reaching 65 without serious illness or injury. I`d rather take my chances with Mr. Russo`s health insurance as being comparable to the services we receive from those agencies than living with the high-stakes crapshoot of staying healthy while uninsured.
