I am always amazed by people like Katherine Art (Voice, Feb. 12)
despairing over our birthrate and Bush`s proposed ”baby bonus.”
This additional exemption provides a little and much needed help for middle-class families. We`re already out there. Our children are not now, and reared correctly will never become, burdens to society.
This small shot in the arm is a drop in the bucket quickly devoured by ear infections, school clothes and braces. Trust me, we`re not going to Disney World on this one.
Furthermore, I`m sure my children`s cost to the environment is far less than her car`s air-conditioning. So who`s to choose which planet-dweller is allowed to tax the environment? Why should we give the ”right” to the biggest polluter because, unfortunately, they may also have the loudest voice? People like Ms. Art always talk about the birthrate in regards to the environment as if they have a sacred claim on ”their” earth to defend against all small usurpers.
I challenge her and others like her to clean up their own space. I`ll teach my children the same.
