I am not a regular reader of the Sports section but was interested in the Olympics this year, especially because of the emergence of independent nations no longer under Soviet rule. It is a thrilling sight to see nations waving their own flags for the first time in many, many years! Perhaps the spirit of the games may have reached its ideal this year.
With these feelings of exhilaration, I opened the Feb. 9 Sports section and read Bernie Lincicome`s column, totally devoted to personalized trivia-one long whine about the long trip, the cold, the inconvenience, the French, etc. I thought perhaps he would recover his losses in his next column. Instead, Feb. 10 brought a detailed account of his broken collarbone with all the ensuing complaints and whines. Who cares? I wanted to read about the Olympics, not Lincicome.
Why not have a columnist who can report on the event he or she is sent to cover and give readers informative observations or essays on the Olympic participants and events?
I expect more from the Tribune. A good example of reporting a sports event was the series on the U.S. Open last summer, written by Melissa Isaacson.
